{"id":8,"date":"2007-11-19T13:39:37","date_gmt":"2007-11-19T13:39:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mcglaysia.wordpress.com\/?p=8"},"modified":"2007-11-19T13:39:37","modified_gmt":"2007-11-19T13:39:37","slug":"one-to-one","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mcglaysia.org\/blog\/learning\/one-to-one\/","title":{"rendered":"One-to-one?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We had a good discussion today about whether or not our school should go ahead with the idea of being a one-to-one school, that is a school where every student has their own laptop.<\/p>\n<p>Actually, we did not discuss that question so much as we have been over the issue many times before and everyone on our Info-Tech team seems to agree that, in order to achieve the educational needs of the 21st century, technology must be ubiquitous within the school.\u00a0 If students are really to be using technology as a tool in their daily work, be it science, math, art or whatever, then they need anytime, anywhere access to said technology.\u00a0 So, we already all agree that we must provide anytime, anywhere access to technology at ISKL.\u00a0 What we discussed today was when that might become a reality, what kind of timeline we might be looking at and other issues surrounding how we might get there, what we need to do and what some of the questions are surrounding the implementation.<\/p>\n<p>Some questions\/issues we raised:<\/p>\n<p>What grades would get laptops?\u00a0 Not Kindergarten certainly.\u00a0 So, which students are we actually talking about and which grade or grades would we start with (assuming we can not just jump in and give 2000 students laptops in one year.<\/p>\n<p>What kind of computing device are we talking about?\u00a0 MacBooks?\u00a0 PC\u2019s? Tablet PC\u2019s?\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/laptop.org\/laptop\/\" title=\"OLPC\" target=\"_blank\">OLPC<\/a>\u2019s? <a href=\"http:\/\/www.asus.com\/products.aspx?l1=24&amp;l2=0&amp;l3=0&amp;l4=0&amp;model=1907&amp;modelmenu=1\" title=\"Asus EEE\" target=\"_blank\">Asus EEE PC<\/a>\u2019s ($400 mini-laptop)? <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alphasmart.com\/k12\/K12_Products\/dana-w_K12.html\" title=\"Alphasmart\" target=\"_blank\">Alphasmart Dana<\/a>\u2019s?\u00a0 Something else entirely?<\/p>\n<p>How will we support them?<\/p>\n<p>What kind of PD will we offer to teachers to prepare them for a room-full of laptop-toting students?<\/p>\n<p>That last question garnered our greatest attention.\u00a0 Without good professional development and training, laptop programs tend to fail out of the gate.\u00a0 This is a crucial piece.<\/p>\n<p>More on that next post.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Should ISKL become a \u201claptop school\u201d?
